Shackles. Chains. The weight of them is completely unbearable. I try to pick them up and carry them, but I end up just dragging them behind me. They are slowing my progress. Each step is harder and harder to take. I am exhausted. My hope is slipping away as the burden of my chains and shackles keeps me rooted in the same spot. There is no freedom to move or live.
Those chains and shackles are my sins. I have carried them around with me for so long they are like a security blanket. I am worn out from how heavy they weigh on me, but they bring comfort. I know them, they feel natural.
Then the unexpected happens. I am introduced to a man who changes it all for me. There is someone that loves me? Someone who sees the scars the shackles and chains have left behind? The new wounds they are leaving on my body, on my heart?
How can he love someone as ugly as I am? Everyone else sees the damage and turns from me, but he isn’t scared away. He sits down next to me and tells me how much he loves me.
You see, he has scars too. He has scars all over him, on his body, on his face, his hands and feet. I want to reach out and touch them. There is something drawing me to those scars, but why? What makes his scars so beautiful and mine so ugly?
And then he explains.
You see sweet friend this man is Jesus. He came to this earth to remove your shackles and your chains. He loves you no matter the damage of sin in your life. What you have done in your past? It doesn’t matter to him. It can stay in the past. The burdens you carry? He wants to carry them for you.
Jesus came to this earth for you. He spent his time on this earth loving those around him. He spent him time with the worst of the worst. He saw their scars and the weight of their own shackles and chains and he loved them.
He didn’t judge them. He didn’t turn his back on them. He actually got his own scars and gave his life for them, for you. He knew someone needed to come and remove the burden of sin from our hearts so we could experience freedom.
Not only do we have freedom from sin, we now have freedom to feel his love to the fullest. There is no barrier. There is no weight in the way, just free access to feel his love and acceptance.
Surely there is a catch you think, you are right. You have to take off your own shackles and chains, turn your back on them and follow him. Whatever sins you have been holding on to, because they are comfortable and natural to who you are, you have to turn and run away from them. Ask Jesus to help you remove them from your life and chase after him with everything you have.
Chase him, run free from the burdens, free from the anguish they bring, free from the loneliness. You have someone that will fill the emptiness from shedding your burdens and sin. He is everything you need.
